There are two basic types of US visas: immigrant visas and nonimmigrant visas. Immigrant visas allow travelers to enter the US in order to live and work permanently in the US. Nonimmigrant visas allow travelers to enter the US temporarily for a specific reason, such as tourism or business.
An immigrant visa is the first step for foreign citizens who want to live permanently in the US, and become lawful permanent residents. To be eligible to apply for an immigrant visa, a foreign citizen generally must be sponsored by a US citizen relative, US lawful permanent resident (family-based immigration) or a prospective employer (employment-based immigration). The sponsor begins the process by filing the appropriate visa Petition with the USCIS, and having it approved. Additional documents and fees are required to complete the process.
